(Countries with Associate European Broadcasting Union Membership, from Wikipedia)
So, it turns out that the Euro- in Eurovision doesn't stand for Europe but for the European Broadcasting Union. It's a contest for countries with EBU membership. So, there really isn't a problem with Australia participating in Eurovision.
... except for one thing. Because of Australia breaking the precedent for Associate EBU Members being a part of the Eurovision song contest, this means that other Associate Members might participate too.
Here are the Associate Members:
- Hong Kong
- South Korea
- New Zealand
- South Africa
- United States
