India builds 220 teraflops supercomputer

New Delhi May 3 2001, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has announced that it has built one of India’s fastest supercomputers with a theoretical peak performance of 220 trillion operations per second.

The computer was fully designed and built at Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre in the southern Indian state of Kerela's capital Thiruvananthapuram, "using commercially available hardware, open source software components and in-house developments.

The Indian Express daily quoted an ISRO statement as saying that the 220 teraflops supercomputer "will be used by space scientists for solving complex aerospace problems".
